「anti-」はギリシャ語の『anti』(反対を意味する)に由来する接頭辞で、『U.S.』は「United States」の略称に由来する。
「anti-」はラテン語・古フランス語経由で英語に入った生産的な接頭辞で「反対」を意味する。『United States』は18世紀に政治的連合を指す語として現れ、『U.S.』の略称は19〜20世紀に一般化した。20世紀に『anti-U.S.』という複合語が生じた。
