語源
「anthologion」はギリシャ語の『ἀνθολόγιον』（アンソロギオン）に由来し、『ἄνθος』（花）と「集める」を表す語根に由来する（文字どおりは「花の集め」＝比喩的に選集）。
『anthologion』は中世ラテン語の『anthologium』を経て、後期ギリシャ語や教会語で用いられ、英語には学術的・専門的な語として借用された。
当初は「花を集めること」を意味したが、比喩的に「選り抜きの集成」を意味するようになり、現在では世俗的なアンソロジーや典礼用の選集の両方を指すようになった。
