語源
「monograph」はギリシャ語に由来し、もともと『monographia』という語から来ており、『mono-』は「単一」を、『graphein』（語根 'graph-'）は「書く」を意味した。
『monograph』はギリシャ語の『monographia』からラテン語（後期/中世ラテン語）を経て、近代英語の『monograph』として採用された。
当初は「単一の主題に関する著述」を意味していたが、やがて「単一主題に関する詳細な学術研究・単行本」という現在の意味へと変化した。
