語源
「florilegium」は中世ラテン語に由来し、中世ラテン語の語『florilegium』に由来する。ラテン語の「flos, floris」は「花」を意味し、「legere」は「集める・選ぶ」を意味した。
『florilegium』は中世ラテン語で（文字通り）「花の集め物」を指し、やがて英語に取り入れられて文献の抜粋を集めた『選集』という比喩的な意味で使われるようになった。語形はラテン語に近いままである。
当初は「花を集めること（文字どおり）」を意味したが、次第に「選ばれた文献の抜粋の集まり（選集）」という現在の意味に発展し、さらに植物図譜を指す用法も生じた。
