語源
「animalisation」はラテン語の『animalis』（語源は『anima（息・生命・魂）』）に由来し、動詞化接尾辞 -ise（仏語 -iser＜希語 -izein）と名詞化接尾辞 -ation（羅語 -atio）が結びついた語。
ラテン語『animalis』がフランス語『animaliser』と -isation 形成に影響し、英語では『animalize/animalise』、のちに名詞『animalisation』（19世紀）として定着。米語形『animalization』も併存。
当初は「あるものを動物的にする」という直截的意味だったが、のちに比喩的な「非人間化」へ広がり、さらに発生学で「動物極（外胚葉）側への偏り」を指す専門的用法を得た。
