語源
「anhydration」はギリシア語の『anhydros』（「an-」＝「無」＋『hydor』＝「水」）に由来する新ラテン語系の科学用語で、名詞は接尾辞「-ation」で形成された。
『anhydros』は科学ラテン語・英語に『anhydrous』として入り、そこから英語で動詞『anhydrate』、のちに名詞『anhydration』が19世紀の科学用語として作られ、現代の専門用語として定着した。
当初は『無水にする行為』を意味し、その技術的用法が現在まで維持され、水の除去による過程・状態全般を指す語として用いられるようになった。
