語源
「anharmonic」はギリシャ語に由来し、否定を表す接頭辞『an-（〜でない）』と『harmonikos（調和の）』（語源は『harmonia（調和）』）の結合から成る。
ギリシャ語『an- + harmonikos』が、ラテン語『harmonicus』、フランス語『harmonique』を経て英語『harmonic』となり、英語で接頭辞『an-』を付して『anharmonic』が成立した。
当初は一般に「調和していない」を意味したが、のちに物理学で理想的な調和からの非線形的ずれを指す専門用語として定着した。
