語源
「nonharmonic」は否定接頭辞「non-」（ラテン語 'non'＝「〜でない」）と「harmonic」（ギリシャ語 'harmonikos' 経由）の合成で、「和声・調和に関する」を意味する'harmonic'に『〜でない』を付けた語である。
「harmonic」はギリシャ語の'harmōnia'/'harmonikos'に由来し、ラテン語・古フランス語を経て中英語に取り入れられた。近代英語で否定接頭辞'non-'を付けて「nonharmonic」となった。
当初「harmonic」は音の一致・調和を指したが、現在「nonharmonic」は音楽や物理において倍音関係にない、あるいは調和しない音や信号を示す用法になっている。
