『Turkey』（国名）は中世ラテン語の『Turchia』『Turcia』に由来し、その要素は中世ギリシャ語の『Tourkoi』に由来する人々（トルコ人）を指した。
『Turkey』（国名）は中世ラテン語『Turchia』／『Turcia』や中英語の形から変化して現代英語の『Turkey』になった。
当初は「トルコ人の土地」を示しており、現在も『トルコ共和国』（国名）を表す語として用いられている（近年は国名表記として『Türkiye』が公式化された）。
