語源
「turkey」は中世後期英語に由来し、国名「トルコ」（ラテン語の'Turchia'やギリシャ語'Tourkia'）を通じて入った。'Turk'は当該地域の人々を指した。
中英語の'turke'や'turkey-cock／turkey-hen'（トルコの商人を通じて欧州に入った鳥を指す表現）から変化し、最終的に現代英語の'turkey'になった。
当初はトルコ経由で取引された鳥を指していたが、次第に現在の北米産の七面鳥を意味するようになり、その後「失敗作」などの比喩的意味も生じた。
