語源
「Oriental」は最終的にラテン語の『oriēns』（『orīrī』の現在分詞、意味は「昇る／東」）に由来し、古フランス語や後期ラテン語を経て、接尾辞『-al』で「東に関する／東洋の」を表す形容詞として英語化されたものです。
ラテン語『oriēns』→ 古フランス語／後期ラテン語の『orient』→ 中英語の『orient』→ 接尾辞『-al』を付けて英語の『Oriental』となり、さらに『style』と結びついて『Oriental-style』という複合語ができた、という推移です。
元は単に「東／昇る」を指していたが、やがて「ヨーロッパより東の地域（東洋）に関する」を意味するようになった。現代では装飾や様式を指す場合が多いが、人に対して使うと古く差別的と受け取られ得る語となっている点に注意が必要です。
