語源
「Latino」はスペイン語の単語「latino」に由来し、もともとラテン語の 'Latinus'（古代ローマの地名ラティウム『～の出身』の意）を意味していた。
「Latino」はイタリア語・スペイン語の 'latino'（ラテン語 'Latinus'〈'Latium' に由来〉）から変化し、英語に取り入れられて現代ではラテンアメリカに関連する人々や文化を指す語として用いられるようになった。
当初は「ラティウム出身の・ラテン人の」を意味していたが、時代を経て現代では「ラテンアメリカ出身・系の人やその文化」を指す意味に変化した。
