語源
'Buddhist'はサンスクリット語の'Buddha'（目覚めた者、悟った者）を語源とする英語の造語で、関係・人を表す接尾辞'-ist'が付けられたものです。
'Buddha'はサンスクリット語やパーリ語からヨーロッパ語に入り、18～19世紀に西洋の学者によって'religion'を指す語（例えば'Buddhism'）が作られ、そこから英語の名詞・形容詞形'Buddhist'が形成されました。
元は『目覚めた者（仏）』を指しましたが、派生語として英語では『仏教徒』および『仏教に関する』という意味で使われるようになりました。
