語源
「workhouse」は英語由来で、「work（労働）」と「house（家・建物）」の複合語に由来する。
中英語の「werk」および「hous」（古英語「weorc」「hūs」）が近代初期英語で複合して「workhouse」となり、現代英語の語形に定着した。
当初は「作業が行われる建物（作業場・工場）」の意味だったが、のちに「労働を課す救貧院」、さらには地域によって「労働を課す矯正施設」の意味へと発展した。
