語源
「whisker」は動詞「whisk」＋接尾辞「-er」によって近代英語初期に作られた語で、「whisk」は中英語の「wisk」（小さな房や素早くひと撫でする動作）に由来します。
中英語の「whisk（wisk）」が派生して名詞化され「whisker」となり、やがて現代英語の「whisker」になりました。
当初は「房・素早い動き」を指しましたが、次第に「顔の毛や触覚の毛」を特に指すようになり、さらに（金属の）ウィスカーなどの専門的な意味も生じました。
