語源
「unionism」は英語に由来し、名詞「union」と接尾辞「-ism」の結合からできている。『union』は最終的にラテン語の『unio』（統一、一体）に由来し、接尾辞『-ism』は慣行・制度・主義を示す。
『union』は古フランス語の『union』や中世ラテン語の『unio』を経て英語に入り、ラテン語『unus』（一つ）に由来する。英語では接尾辞『-ism』をつけて『unionism』が形成された。
当初は「一体であること」「統一」という意味だったが、次第にその『一体性』に基づく特定の主義や運動（現代では労働組合運動や政治的連合支持など）を意味するようになった。
