「turntable」は英語に由来する合成語で、'turn'＋'table'から成る。'turn'は最終的に古フランス語の'torner'（ラテン語'tornare'由来）で「回す」を意味し、'table'は古フランス語の'table'（ラテン語'tabula'由来）で「板・台」を意味する。
