語源
「transposition」はラテン語に由来し、特に「transpositio」（'transponere'に由来）から来ている。ここで『trans-』は「越えて・〜を横切って」を、『ponere』は「置く」を意味した。
「transposition」は中世ラテン語の『transpositio』（および古フランス語の影響）を経て英語に入り、ラテン語の『transponere』（『trans-』＋『ponere』）の構造を保ちながら中英語期に定着した。
当初は「（物を）横に移す行為」を意味していたが、時間とともに現在のより具体的な用法、すなわち音楽の調の変更、数学での位置の入れ替え、遺伝物質の移動などの意味に発展した。
