語源
「tortuosity」はラテン語の「tortuositas」に由来し、「tortu-」（さらに遡れば「torquere」）は「ねじる」を意味した。
「tortuositas」は中世・古フランス語を経て中英語の『tortuous』などの形になり、最終的に現代英語の名詞『tortuosity』となった。
当初は「ねじれている性質」を指したが、時とともに「曲がり具合（windingness）」や「回りくどさ・複雑さ」のような抽象的な意味も含むようになった。
