語源
「convolution」はラテン語の「convolutio」に由来し、'con-'は「一緒に」を、'volvere'は「巻く／転がす」を意味した。
ラテン語の「convolutio」から後期ラテン語・古フランス語等を経て中英語に入り、現代英語の「convolution」になった。
当初は「一緒に巻くこと／巻かれたもの」を意味していたが、次第に「ねじれ・巻きつき」「複雑さ」「脳のひだ」「数学の畳み込み演算」などの意味に広がった。
