語源
「testosterone」は1930年代の近代ラテン語／英語の造語で、ラテン語の「testis」（睾丸）と、ケトン型ステロイドを示す接尾辞的要素「-sterone」（例：androsterone）から形成された。
「testosterone」は1930年代に活性のある男性ホルモンが単離された後に命名された。以前のステロイド名（例：「androsterone」）をモデルに、ラテン語「testis」と接尾辞「-sterone」を組み合わせて現代の学術用語が作られた。
