語源
「estrogen」は新ラテン語の『oestrogen』に由来し、『oestr-』（ギリシャ語『oistros』由来）は「熱狂・性的欲求」を意味し、接尾辞『-gen』は「生み出すもの」を意味する。
『oistros』（ギリシャ）→『oestrus』（ラテン）→新ラテン語の『oestrogen』→英語の『oestrogen』、さらに米国表記の『estrogen』へと変化した。
当初は「発情（エストラス）や性的衝動を引き起こすもの」を指していたが、次第に「女性の生殖発達・機能を調節するホルモン群」を指す意味に変化した。
