語源
「shark」（「だます、搾取する」の意味）はドイツ語の『Schurke』（中高ドイツ語の 'schurk' を含む）に由来し、『Schurke』は『ならず者、悪党』を意味していた。
『Schurke』（ドイツ語）が近代初期英語に『sharke』／『shark』の形で借用され、16–17世紀に『ならず者』や『詐欺師』を意味した。そこから動詞の 'to shark'（だます）や動名詞 'sharking' が発達した。
元々は『ならず者・悪党』を指していたが、次第に『だます・搾取する』という行為の意味へと変化した。
