語源
「scape」（『柄・茎』の意）はラテン語『scapus』に由来し、『scapus』は「棒・茎」を意味した。
植物学的・構造的な意味の『scape』はラテン語『scapus』（さらにギリシャ語由来）から中世ラテン語を経て中英語の『scape』となり、現代英語の『scape』になった。動詞的な意味（『逃れる』）は古仏語の『escaper』などの系統と関係し、『escape』に近い発展をしたが、語義や発達の経路は別系統である。
当初は「棒・茎」を意味しており、植物学や昆虫学で使われる特定の茎・節の意味に限定されていった。動詞の『逃れる』の用法は後に現れた（やや古い・方言的）用法で、現在ではまれである。
