語源
「peduncle」は中世ラテン語の単語「pedunculus」に由来し、'ped-'は「足」を、縮小辞の'-unculus'は「小さい」を意味し、文字通り「小さな足（小さな突起）」を表した。
「pedunculus」は中世ラテン語を経て英語に入ってきて、最終的に現代英語の「peduncle」になった。
当初は「小さな足（足のような突起）」を意味していたが、次第に植物学・解剖学・形態学での「柄・茎状の構造」を指すようになった。
