語源
「robusta」はラテン語に由来し、形容詞 'robustus' にさかのぼる。'robur' は「オーク（樫）」や「強さ」を意味し、'robustus' は「強い」や「たくましい」を意味した。
'robustus' は古典ラテン語・後期ラテン語で「強い」「たくましい」を表した。博物学や学術ラテン語で女性形の 'robusta' が種小名として用いられ（例：Coffea robusta）、その学術名から英語の普通名 'robusta' が採用された。
当初は「強い」や「硬い」を意味していたが、次第に特に味や栽培性が強いコーヒーの一種を指す語へと意味が収束した。
