語源
「rent-seeking」は1960～1970年代の英米の経済学文献に由来し、ゴードン・タロックらの論考で語られ、アン・クルーガーらによって広められた。要素は経済学での「rent（経済的地代・利得）」と動名詞の「seeking（求めること）」の結合。
「rent」は中英語で古仏語 'rente' を経て取り入れられ、支払い・収入を意味した。現代の複合語「rent-seeking」は20世紀に 'rent' に 'seeking' を付して、政治経済における行動を指す技術的用語として形成された。
元来『rent』は土地や財産の使用に対する支払い（収入）を意味したが、20世紀以降『rent-seeking』という複合語は、政治的・規制的環境の操作を通じて不当に得られる利得を求める行為という狭い批判的概念に意味が変化した。
