語源
「probation」はラテン語に由来し、特に『probatio』という語から来ている。語根の『probare』は「試す／証明する」を、『probus』は「良い」を意味した。
『probation』は中世ラテン語の『probatio』（および古フランス語の『probacion』）から中英語の『probacion』を経て、現代英語の『probation』になった。
当初は「試すこと・証明する行為」を意味していたが、次第に「（能力・行動の）試用期間」や「監督付きの条件付き釈放（保護観察）」という現在の具体的な意味に発展した。
