語源
「pre-animism」は接頭辞「pre-」（ラテン語 'prae'、意味は「〜の前」）と名詞「animism」（ラテン語 'anima'）の結合から生じた。'anima'は「息、魂」を意味した。
「animism」は19世紀に（E.B. Tylorらによって）ラテン語 'anima' がフランス語 'animisme' を経て英語 'animism' になった語である。接頭辞 'pre-'（ラテン語 'prae'）が近代英語で付され、'pre-animism' という複合語が生まれた。
当初「pre-animism」は単に「アニミズムの前」の時間的・発達的な位置を示したが、次第に人類学・宗教学で特定の信仰類型（無人格の力への信仰など）を表す理論的カテゴリーとして用いられるようになった。
