語源
「proto-animism」は現代英語の複合語で、接頭辞「proto-」はギリシャ語protos（「最初」）由来、後半の「animism」はラテン語anima（「魂、息」）由来です。
「animism」はラテン語のanimaからフランス語のanimismeのような語を経て英語のanimismとなり、ギリシャ語由来の接頭辞proto-が人類学で『より初期の段階』を示すために結び付けられ、「proto-animism」が作られました。
元来はそれぞれ「最初」「魂」を指したが、結合語としては人類学・宗教学で「アニミズムの初期的形態」を意味するようになりました。
