語源
「ante-animism」はラテン語の接頭辞「ante-」（「前」を意味する）と、ラテン語の「anima」（「呼吸」「魂」）に由来する「animism」を組み合わせてできた語である。
「animism」は19世紀に人類学で用いられるようになり（エドワード・タイラーらによって知られる）、ラテン語の「anima」から派生した。現代英語では接頭辞「ante-」を「animism」に付けて「アニミズムに先立つもの」を表す合成語として使われる。
当初は単に「アニミズムの前」を意味していたが、後に宗教発達論における仮説的な前アニミズム的態度や段階を指す分析用語として用いられるようになった。
