語源
'polyamory'は現代英語で生まれ、ギリシャ語'polus'（多い）に由来する結合形'poly-'と、ラテン語'amar/amor'（愛）に関連する語幹から構成されている。
'polyamory'は20世紀後半に英語で造語され、'poly-'とラテン語の'amour/amor'（愛）に基づく語幹を組み合わせて作られた。'monogamy'や'polygamy'のような既存語の影響を受け、非一夫一婦制の議論の中で定着した。
