語源
「poetical」はラテン語・ギリシャ語に由来し、最終的にはギリシャ語の'poiētikos'(ποιητικός)に遡る。'poiētēs'(ποιητής)は「作る人／詩人」を、'poiein'(ποιεῖν)は「作る・創作する」を意味した。
ギリシャ語'poiētikos'からラテン語'poeticus'、古フランス語'poetique/poetical'を経て中英語に入り、現代英語の'poetical'となった。
当初は「作る人／詩人に関する」という意味だったが、やがて「詩に関する」および「詩的な性質を持つ」という現在の意味に発展した。
