語源
「phototropism」はギリシャ語に由来し、結合形の「photo-」は「phōtós（光）」、「tropos」は「回る・向く」を意味し、名詞化の接尾辞「-ism」が付いた語である。
「phototropism」は19世紀の近代科学・生物学用語としてギリシャ語要素から作られ、観察される光指向的な回転・成長を表すために造語された。中英語には由来しない学術的造語である。
当初は「光に応じて回ること（光への回転）」を意味し、現代でも生物が光に向かってまたは光から離れて成長・運動することを指す専門用語として意味はほぼ保たれている。
