語源
「norm-free」は現代英語の合成語で、'norm'（ラテン語の'norma'、古フランス語'norme'を経て、規則や基準を意味）と 'free'（古英語 'frēo' から、束縛されないことを意味）から成る。
「norm」は古フランス語'norme'を経由して英語に入り、元は大工の曲尺（'norma'）から転じて『規則』を意味した。「free」は古英語 'frēo' に由来し『束縛されていない』を意味する。これらを組み合わせた' norm-free'は現代において『規範から免れている』を表すために作られた合成語である。
個別には『norm』が規則・基準を意味し『free』が束縛されないことを意味したが、現代では合成して『規範に支配されない／規範から自由である』という意味で使われるようになった。
