語源
「non-self」は現代英語で、『non-』（ラテン語 non「～でない」から）と古英語の「self」（「自己、その人自身」の意）を結合してできた語です。
「self」は古英語の 'self'（原ゲルマン語 *selbaz に由来）から発展し、接頭辞 'non-' はラテン語の 'non' に由来して中世以降の英語で否定を作るために使われました。のちにこの複合語はパーリ語・サンスクリット語の anatta／anatman を訳す語として使われるようになりました。
元々は『自己でない』という単純な否定複合語でしたが、次第に特に仏教哲学において『恒常的で独立した自己は存在しない』という専門用語としての意味を帯びるようになりました。
