「non-lettered」は、ラテン語「non（＝『not』）」と、古フランス語・中英語を経たラテン語「littera（＝『letter・learning』）」に由来する。
歴史的変遷
「lettered」はラテン語「littera」から古フランス語「lettre」を経て中英語に入り「lettered（学識のある）」となり、その後近代英語で否定接頭辞「non-」が付いて「non-lettered」となった。
意味の変化
当初「lettered」は「学識のある」を意味したが、「non-」が付くことで「学識のない・非識字」の意味となり、また文字のない状態を表す文字通りの用法も生じた。
