語源
「non-chiral」は英語に由来し、接頭辞「non-」（ラテン語 'non'、「〜でない」を意味）と「chiral」から成る。'chiral'の語根ギリシャ語「cheir」は「手」を意味した。
「chiral」は近代科学英語で造られた語で（1894年にケルヴィン卿が用いた例が知られる）、ギリシャ語「cheir」（「手」）から派生した。後に英語で接頭辞「non-」を付けて「non-chiral」が作られた。
元々語根は文字通り「手」を意味したが、やがて「鏡像と重ね合わせられない（左右性を持つ）」という技術的意味になり、「non-chiral」はその性質がないことを示すようになった。
