語源
「nativist」は英語で「native」と接尾辞「-ist」を結合して作られた語に由来する。「native」は最終的にラテン語の「nativus」（ラテン語動詞「nasci」の過去分詞「natus」）に由来し、「natus」は「生まれた」を意味した。
「native」は古フランス語や中世ラテン語を経て英語に入り、名詞や形容詞として用いられた。英語で接尾辞「-ist」を付けて「nativist」が形成され、19世紀に政治用語としてよく用いられるようになった。
もともとは「生まれた／出生に関する」を意味していたが、時間とともに「移民より出生者を優遇する人」あるいは「ある能力が生得的だと考える支持者」を指す語へと意味が広がった。
