語源
「mystagogue」はギリシャ語の『mystagōgos』に由来し、そこで『mustēs』（myst-）は「秘儀に入った者」を、『agōgos』は「導く者」を意味した。
『mystagōgos』は後期ラテン語・中世ラテン語で『mystagogus』となり、中英語を経て現代英語の『mystagogue』になった。
当初は「秘儀の入門者を導く者」を指し、現在でもその核心的意味を保ちつつ、秘教的・難解な教義を導く・解説する者という広い意味でも使われるようになった。
