語源
『modulate』はラテン語、特に語『modulatus』（『modulari』の過去分詞）に由来し、『modus』は「測ること・様式」を意味した。
『modulate』はラテン語の『modulatus』から後期ラテン語・古フランス語の『moduler』などを経て中英語に入り、最終的に現代英語の『modulate』になった。
初めは「リズムや旋律を測る（調整する）」という意味だったが、時代を経て「（音量・音調など）を調節する」という現在の意味に発展した。
