語源
「metamorphism」はギリシャ語の要素『meta-（変化）』と『morphē（形）』、および名詞化接尾辞『-ism』に由来する。
『metamorphism』はギリシャ語『metamorphōsis（μεταμόρφωσις）』→ ラテン語／中世ラテン語『metamorphosis』 → 中英語／近代英語を経て科学用語として定着し、特に岩石の変化を表す名詞形として成立した。
もともとは「形の変化」を意味したが、時とともに専門化し、特に地質学で『熱や圧力による岩石の変質』を指す語になった。
