語源
『mercurial』はラテン語の『Mercuriālis』に由来し、『Mercuri-』は（ローマ神）『Mercurius』（水星／メルクリウス）を指し、接尾辞の『-alis』は『…に関する』を意味します。
『mercurialis』（中世ラテン語）から古フランス語や中英語を経て、現代英語の『mercurial』になりました。
当初は『（神・惑星・元素としての）水星に関する』を意味しましたが、次第に『変わりやすい・不安定な』という比喩的な意味が加わりました。
