語源
「intellectualism」は英語で、『intellectual』と接尾辞『-ism』から成る。『intellectual』は最終的にラテン語の『intellectus』（理解）に由来し、接尾辞『-ism』はギリシャ語の『ismos』（行為・主義）に由来する。
『intellectual』はラテン語の『intellectus』（『intelligere』の過去分詞、理解する）に由来し、アンゴ＝フランス語や中英語を経て英語化された。そこに『-ism』が付加されて『intellectualism』が作られた。
当初は知性に関する性質や状態を指したが、次第に知的活動や理論を重んじる主義・態度を意味するようになった。
