「反-（anti-）」はギリシャ語の「対抗・反対」を表す接頭辞から、「intellectual」はラテン語の「intellectus」（『理解する』を意味する『intelligere』から）に由来し、「-ism」はギリシャ語の『-ismos』がラテン語や古フランス語を経て『主義・制度』を表す接尾辞になったものです。
「anti-intellectualism」は英語で「anti-」＋「intellectual」＋「-ism」を結合して作られ、19世末から20世紀初頭にかけて、知識人や知的活動に反対する態度や主義を指す語として定着しました。
当初は「知識人に対する反対」を指していましたが、時とともに専門知識や知的制度に対する不信や評価の低下を含む広い意味へと拡大しました。
