語源
「incubate」はラテン語の「incubare」に由来し、接頭辞「in-」は「〜の上/〜に」を、語根「cubare」は「横たわる／寝る」を意味した。
「incubare」→（後期ラテン語）「incubatus」→（古フランス語/中世ラテン語の影響）「incuber」などを経て、現代英語の「incubate」になった。
元々は「（鳥が）卵の上に横たわる」という意味だったが、次第に「成長させるために温める」という意味に広がり、さらに「管理された条件下で培養する」「（事業・考えを）育てる」といった比喩的用法にも発展した。
