語源
「idealise」はフランス語、具体的には語『idéaliser』に由来し、『idéal-』は（ラテン語『idealis』やギリシャ語『idea』に由来し）『形・ありさま』を意味した。
『idealise』は19世紀のフランス語『idéaliser』から変化し、借用と適応を経て現代英語の『idealise』（米では『idealize』）になった。
当初は「理想・形に関するもの」を意味していたが、時を経て「理想的に表現する・理想化する」という現在の意味に発展した。
