語源
「hypotaxis」は古代ギリシャ語の語『ὑποταξίς（hypotaxis）』に由来し、接頭辞『hypo-』は「下」を、『taxis』は「配列・秩序」を意味した。
『hypotaxis』はギリシャ語の『hypotaxis』からラテン語の『hypotaxis』を経て、学術語として現代英語の『hypotaxis』になった。
当初は「下に配列すること、従属的に配置する行為」を意味していたが、次第に「節の従属（従属節の使用）」という文法的意味に収束した。
