語源
「highbrow」は英語に由来し、20世紀初頭に 'high' + 'brow' の合成語として成立。'brow' はもともと「額」を意味し、比喩的に知性や社会的地位を示した。
『highbrow』は 'high-browed' のような表現や1900年代初頭の米国スラングから発展し、現代英語では一語の 'highbrow' として定着した。
当初は「額が高い（文字通り）」を指したが、次第に「知的・教養のある」を意味する比喩になり、さらに「選民的・気取った」という含意が加わった。
