語源
「hieroglyph」はギリシャ語、具体的には『ἱερογλύφος（hieroglyphos）』に由来し、『hieros』は「神聖な」、『glyphein』は「彫る」を意味した。
『hieroglyph』はラテン語の『hieroglyphus』や古フランス語の語形を経て、中英語を通じて現代英語の『hieroglyph』になった。
当初は「神聖に彫られた記号」を意味していたが、時を経て「古代の書記に用いられた絵や記号」という現在の意味に変化した。
